Meeting Rick Perry, Our Soon-to-Be New President

What month is it now? Depending on when it is you are sometimes learning about Rick Perry in little spurts - or he’s revealed his run for the Presidency and now the media are filled with discussions of the interesting different option.

In any event, if you’d like to get a fast overview regarding exactly who he is and where he got his start, here’s a just-the-facts biography that will have you up-to-speed in a few swats of a Texas steer’s tail.

Beginning & Secondary Education Years

Rick Perry was born March 4, 1950 in Paint Creek, Haskell Country Texas. His dad Joseph Perry and mom Amelia Holt Perry were ranchers and cotton growers. His dad was an enthusiastic Texas Democrat, school board commissioner in Haskell County and also a member of the school board on its own.

He graduated in 1968 from Paint Creek high school and went to Texas A&M University. While in university, he worked on and off as a book salesperson knocking on doorways and discovering how to build relationships with people coming from all walks of life. Then graduating from the Texas A&M Animal Science program in 1972.

Armed Forces Service

Signing up for the Air Force directly from university, Rick Perry went through pilot instruction and was given an assignment to command the huge C-130 “Hercules” heavy transport airplanes in the US, European countries and also the Middle East.

He attained the rank of Captain and left the armed forces in 1977, returning home to work the family’s cotton acerage together with his dad.

Romantic Relationship

After returning home from the military, in 1982 Perry wed Anita Thigpen, a youth sweetheart he’d known since primary school. Anita had attained a college degree in nursing from West Texas State University. The two have been wed about thirty years now.

Perry in Politics

Perry started his journey in politics in 1984 when he won election to the Texas House of Representatives.

He was actually a Democrat - albeit a “Texas Democrat” - and even ran Al Gore’s campaign in Texas throughout the 1988 primaries. He moved affiliation and become a member of the Republican Party in 1989, stating he had “come to his senses.”

He proceeded to successfully run for Texas Agricultural Commissioner in 1990, the first office where he touted the sale of Texas farm products in various other states and places overseas. He was reelected Agricultural Commissioner in 1994.

Then he launched and won his campaign for Lieutenant Governor in 1998. As soon as George W. Bush, at the time Texas Governor, departed to take up the office of President of the US in 2000, Perry ascended to the office of Texas Governor.

He launched his first comprehensive campaign for the Texas Governor's office in 2002 and won another campaign. He ran for a second time and gained reelection in 2006. And then one more time in 2010. A economic and cultural conservative, he is now the longest serving Governor of Texas using an outstanding track record of pro-business and job building policies. Furthermore, his policies in Texas have been the cause of for the most part one half of the United States job expansion throughout the last decade.
